Marcos’ Approval and Trust Plunge, Duterte’s Support Rises in March Pulse Asia Survey

In a significant shift in public sentiment, a whisper of discontent has become a roar. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has seen his approval and trust ratings drop dramatically, while Vice President Sara Duterte’s popularity has surged, according to the latest Pulse Asia survey conducted from March 23 to 29, 2025.

The survey, which polled 2,400 respondents across the Philippines, paints a stark picture. Marcos’ approval rating has plummeted from 42 percent in February to just 25 percent in March. A striking 53 percent of respondents now disapprove of his performance, with 22 percent remaining neutral. His trust rating mirrors this decline, falling from 42 percent to 25 percent, while his distrust rating has surged from 32 percent to 54 percent.

“The numbers reflect a growing unease among Filipinos,” said Ronald Holmes, president of Pulse Asia, in a statement to Rappler. While the survey does not pinpoint exact causes, analysts suggest that rising costs of basic commodities, like rice and gasoline, and controversial policy decisions may be fueling public frustration.

In stark contrast, Vice President Sara Duterte’s star is rising. Her approval rating has climbed from 52 percent in February to 59 percent in March, with only 16 percent disapproving and 25 percent holding a neutral stance. Her trust rating has also seen a notable boost, rising eight percentage points from 53 percent to 61 percent. Pulse Asia highlighted that Duterte is the only top official to see an improvement in trust ratings, a testament to her growing connection with the Filipino people.

Duterte’s rise may be linked to her visible efforts in education and community programs, though the survey does not delve into specifics. “Her initiatives seem to resonate with many Filipinos,” noted a political analyst on an ABS-CBN News segment, reflecting on similar trends in past surveys.

The numbers tell a story of a nation at a crossroads. For Marcos, the steep decline in public support signals an urgent need to address pressing concerns, from economic pressures to public trust in governance. The survey’s timing is critical, as the administration navigates a complex landscape of domestic and international challenges.

For Duterte, the surge in approval and trust ratings strengthens her position as a key political figure. Her growing popularity could shape her role in future elections or policy debates, giving her a platform to influence the national agenda.

The survey results ripple beyond the numbers. They reflect the hopes, frustrations, and aspirations of millions of Filipinos. As one respondent shared anonymously, “We want leaders who listen and act on our needs.” This sentiment underscores the urgency for both leaders to respond to the public’s call.

Political observers warn that such fluctuations in approval ratings can reshape governance and electoral prospects. “These shifts are a wake-up call,” said a commentator on Philippine News Agency. “Leaders must bridge the gap with the people to maintain stability.”

As the Philippines moves forward, the contrast between Marcos’ struggles and Duterte’s gains will likely spark debates about leadership and direction. For now, the Pulse Asia survey offers a clear snapshot: Marcos faces an uphill battle to win back public confidence, while Duterte rides a wave of support that could redefine her political future.

The question remains—how will these leaders respond to the voice of the people? Only time will tell, but the stakes have never been higher.
